Gordon primary school has withdrawn its application to fell five trees in Earlshall Road.

The school will pursue alternative ways to reduce the severe problem of bird poo on the reception outdoor space, including pollarding the trees to prevent roosting by parakeets and pigeons.

Reduced school budgets have made it difficult for the school to allocate money to managing the avenue of trees alongside its southern boundary but will explore winning grants as a way to fund the work.

The proposal, which needed permission to fell the officially protected three limes and two planes, attracted more than 300 objections on the council's website and a 900-name petition.

Plans for 32 flats on six and four storeys opposite Mottingham Station are being recommended for approval by council planners.

The block would replace the corner house on Crossmead, once a GP surgery.

The developers say its height would be equivalent to those on opposite corners of the junction with Court Road and planners believe the intrusion on neighbouring houses would not be excessive.

The recommendation is being made to next Tuesday's Planning Board, despite 160 objections having been registered, mainly by local residents.

The development would be mainly two bedroomed properties, with some one and three beds. Planners proposed to accept a payment of £230,000 for affordable housing in the borough from developers in lieu of provision within the new blocks.
